World Environment Day at GIIS Chinchwad | 5th June, 2013

Event Date : 5th June, 2013

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The aim is to raise environmental awareness and to encourage action to protect the environment. Every year a theme is set for the World Environment Day by UNEP ( United Nations Environment Programme).
A special assembly, at GIIS Chinchwad, was hosted by students of class IX on 5th June 2013, to observe World Environment Day.
The assembly started with a hymn and was followed by the thought for the day, which set the ball rolling on a very positive note for one and all. The students then gave a speech, which talked about the theme for the year 2013.
“ The 2013 theme for World Environment Day is Think.Eat.Save. The campaign addresses the huge annual wastage and losses in food, which, if conserved, would release a large quantity of food as well as reduce the overall carbon footprint. The campaign aims to bring about awareness in countries with lifestyles resulting in food wastage. It also aims to empower people to make informed choices about the food they eat so as to reduce the overall ecological impact due to the worldwide production of food.”
A quiz, that was open to all present, was then conducted. Finally, the GIIS family took a pledge to protect and preserve the environment. Teachers took this theme further in the form of activities in their respective periods. They were as follows:
  • A plantation drive was conducted, wherein, students planted mustard and lentil seeds in the school garden. They were helped by the school gardener and a few teachers.
  • In the Hindi period, the students participated in ‘poster making and slogan writing’ activity, set by the teacher.
  • The focus of the I.T. period was a class discussion on ‘E-waste’, followed by students researching on ‘recycling of e-waste’.
  • The students were guided in ‘Speech writing’ on the topic of ‘conservation of environment’ in the English period.
  • In the Math period, the students were divided into groups and had to ideate on how Math and environment are related.

At the end of the day, the students were left feeling self-motivated. They promised themselves, to do their bit in the preservation and the conservation of the environment.
